The Filipino American Veterans Society, Inc. is open to all military members active, reserve, retired, veterans and their surviving spouse or child of the US Armed Forces.

Mission and Vision
1) To promote fellowship and unity among Filipino and American veterans.
2) To provide moral support and assistance to the sick, distressed or deceased member.
3) To maintain a scholarship program for qualified immediate dependents of members.
4) To improve communication among veterans and network with veterans organizations.
5) To be an active voice to protect veterans rights, benefits, and entitlement.

Captain J. Daniel McCarthy, Judge Advocate General’s Corps, United States Navy (Retired) is a 1977 US Naval
Academy graduate will be the guest speaker of the Filipino American Veterans Society Induction of Officers at the
Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 91 in Jacksonville, Florida on January 23, 2010.
In 1980, Captain McCarthy was selected for the Law Education Program. He attended Duke Law School where he
graduated with honors in 1983, also receiving the North Carolina Trial Lawyer’s Litigation Award. His first
assignment as a judge advocate was as Trial Counsel and Command Services Officer at Naval Legal Service
Office Jacksonville, from 1983-1986. Captain McCarthy next served as Staff Judge Advocate for Commander,
Naval Surface Group, Western Pacific, from 1986–1988, where he was responsible for the legal needs of 21
overseas homeported ships. Captain McCarthy was then assigned as Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, U.S.
Naval Forces, Philippines, from 1988-1990. He then attended George Washington University Law School, where
he received an LL.M. in International Law, graduating in 1991 with highest honors.
After completing his post-graduate education, Captain McCarthy served as Executive Assistant to RADM W. L.
Schachte, the Acting Judge Advocate General of the Navy, from 1991-1993. Captain McCarthy was then selected
to serve as Special Assistant for Legal and Legislative Affairs to the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable John H.
Dalton. He served the Secretary of the Navy in this capacity from 1993-1998.
In September 1998, Captain McCarthy assumed command of Trial Service Office Southeast, headquartered at
Naval Station Mayport, Florida. He retired in that position in August, 2002 and was a Senior Counsel at Holland &
Knight, LLP. In May, 2003 he was appointed the Director of Military Affairs and Chief of Veterans & Disabled
Services for the City of Jacksonville. In that capacity he reported to the Mayor of Jacksonville, The Honorable John
Peyton, on all matters involving Jacksonville’s military and disabled communities. On January 6, 2009 he was
appointed to the position of Chief Assistant to The Honorable Angela Corey, the State Attorney for the 4th Judicial
Circuit.
He is married to the former Barbara Weaver of Aiken, South Carolina. Barbara is employed as the Director of
Medical Information at the Mayo Clinic. They have three children: John (27), a naval officer serving as Flag Aide to
Commander Fourth Fleet, Jim (24) a teacher and coach at PV High School, and Julianne (21) a sophomore at
Johns Hopkins University.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the officers 2010, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those of you who were able to attend the event, likewise to all of members of this
organization. I am humbled by the enthusiasm displayed by the officers ,members and guests who were in attendance. With all your support, I am confident we will
have a successful 2010. I am looking forward to your active participation to all our endeavor. For planning purposes, you will all be informed of our forthcoming events
and activities The Calendar of Events will be posted at the FAVS website.
The Induction of Officers and BOD was a success. Atty. Dan McCarthy, Chief Assistant to the State Attorney’s office and his wife were delighted to be invited as the
guest speaker. Taste of Manila has done a tremendous job catering for this event. I would also like to thank Boyet Salvador for providing the entertainment. It was a
memorable event and good times had by all. Thank you all for your support.
Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, I want to especially recognize all the officers and members who helped put-together this event.
